History The first recorded meeting of Tipperary Races at Barronstown Course was Monday, 27 March 1848. In 1871/72, the races were abandoned due to smallpox, but were revived in 1881. In the early days of Barronstown (the predecessor to Limerick junction racecourse) there was only one bookmaker, who also had a roulette table.

The first races at Limerick junction took place in September 1916 promoted by Mr T Gardiner Wallis by the celebrated racing personality and his trainer Senator J J Parkinson and colleagues Stephen Grehan and Charles Moore.

A major incentive to the commencement of Limerick junction was the promise of a special railway siding from the Great Southern and Western Railway Company.

The name was changed from Limerick junction to Tipperary Racecourse for a meeting on 8 May 1986.
